How to Make an LED Flashlight for a Fraction of the Price
LED flashlights have all but replaced traditional flashbulb flashlights. LED lights, unlike traditional flashlights of the past, do not burn out as often, and usually last for a year....
The only downside that comes with LED flashlights is price - LEDs are not expensive, and the casing of the flashlight certainly doesn't make up the difference. The batteries are the most expensive part, but you have to purchase those anyway. What is the point of spending $30 for an LED magnification flash light when you can make your own for a few dollars and 10 minutes of time?
If you want to make your own LED flashlight for less than $10, follow these simple steps.
Items Needed
1" diameter PVC pipe
1 end cap for PVC pipe
Hack saw
9v battery
1k resistor
Cheap magnifying glass 1" in diameter
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Small piece of tin foil
1 or two jumbo-sized LED bulbs
1 toggle switch
1 9v battery plug
Soldering iron and solder
Prepare the case
Step 1: Take your PVC pipe and cut it about 4 inches in length. Place the end cap over one end and tap it firmly into place. Next, drill a hole in the side of the PVC pipe about 2 inches from the bottom.
Step 2: Remove the magnifying lens from the magnifying glass you bought.
Prepare the Bulb
Step 1: Take your bulb and identify the negative lead - this will be the wire that is shorter. Solder that to the black wire on the 9v battery plug. Now, solder the red wire of the 9v battery plug to one of the connections on the toggle switch. Solder the resistor to the connection directly across from the one you just soldered the positive wire to, and then finally solder the other end of the resistor to the positive lead on the LED (the longer one). You should be able to turn the light on and off with the switch.
Put the two together
Step 1: Drop the battery with the connector on it into the PVC pipe. Using a pair of tweezers (or very small fingers), insert the toggle switch through the hole you drilled in the pipe. Use a drop of hot glue to hold it in place.
Glue the LEDs closer to the top onto the sides of the pipe.
Step 2: Cut a circular square of tin foil and place it over the two bulbs. Using a pair of tweezers, carefully push the bulbs through the foil until it lays just under them. This will keep the light reflected to the top of the device.
Step 3: Using hot glue, glue the magnifying lens over the open end of the tube. This will magnify the light into a more even, larger circle.
