Ekstase: How the Movie Industry's First Nude Scene Change the World

A brief history of how the world owes wireless technology to an actress.

Lamarr was born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler to a Jewish family in Vienna, Austria and died in Altamonte Springs, Florida (near Orlando). While her husband searched the brothel, a man came into the room and she had sex with him so she would not be discovered. Whether the Nazis ever knew about Mandl's and Lamarr's Jewish origins has been debated by historians. It appears that Mandl covertly hid his Jewish origins and converted to Christianity under apparent pressure. Most believe that Lamarr's co-invention of spread spectrum as a prospective World War II military application was ignited by her desire to do anything in her power to help see Nazism defeated.

After her escape to London, she met Louis B. Mayer. She altered her name to Hedy Lamarr, choosing the surname in deference to a legendary beautiful film star of the silent era, Barbara LaMarr, who had died of a drug overdose in 1926. While working as an actress Lamarr was looking for someway to use her technical knowledge to help with the war effort. Hedy Lamarr and composer George Antheil received a U.S for their Secret Communication System on August 11, 1942. This early version of frequency changed between 88 frequencies and was intended to make radio-guided torpedoes harder for enemies to detect or jam. Unfortunately the idea was divisive and ahead of its time. The technology could not be implemented until 1962, when it was used by U.S. military ships during a blockade of Cuba. By then the patent had expired and neither Lamarr nor Antheil made any money from the patent. Lamarr's frequency-hopping idea served as the basis for modern spread-spectrum communication technology used in devices from Cell phones and satellite encryption to WiFi Internet connections. Lamarr wanted to join the National Inventors Council but she was told that she could better help the war effort by via her celebrity standing to sell War Bonds. Willing to do what ever it took for the war effort she once raised $7,000,000 during just one event.
