Black & Decker Cordless Chain Saw Good for Small Jobs but Not Much Else
The Black & Decker Cordless Chain Saw is good for trimming tree branches but not for cutting firewood.
Since I've had a lot of success with Black amp; Decker products in the past, I decided on their 18-Volt Cordless Saw.
After using it for a little over a month, I've come to find that, while it's good for small jobs around my yard, it's not a tool I would depend upon if I was doing much more than trimming.
The saw charges up relatively quickly compared to other cordless tools. I had the battery in the charger for maybe 7 hours and it was ready to go. The cordless chain saw is also very light weight, making it easy to use. However, I think the fact it is so light also limits what it can do.
I've found that, if I'm cutting branches up to about 4 inches in diameter, the saw is fantastic. My trimmer usually will get stuck in branches that thick; but the chain saw cuts through them like they were made out of butter.
However, if you're looking for a saw to cut fire wood, this is definitely not the tool for you. We recently removed an apple tree from our property and I tried to use the saw to trim down the stump a little more. The saw made it through the 12-inch-thick piece of wood but barely. There really wasn't enough power and, for a time, I thought I would have to get out my ax to finish the job. It got stuck a couple of times and, by the time I was done, it was ready to be charged again.
Assembling the saw is also a bit tricky. The instructions never tell you there's a tool hidden in the handle and it was by luck that I found this. I also ended up taking the first saw I purchased back because the pin on the adjusting screw broke when I was trying to put the saw together. Again, this isn't a huge deal considering what I'm using it for. But, I'm sure there are plenty of consumers out there who probably won't have the patience I do.
Would I recommend this saw to you? It really depends on what you plan on using it for. If you're just trimming small tree branches, I think this is a good product, especially for the price. But, if you're counting on it for much more than that, spend the money and get yourself something with a lot more power.
